New here, looking for advice

Options
Hi, this is my first post and I'm here really because I don't know what to do.

I was contacted out of the blue by a company called Lowell informing me that I had a debt to JD Williams of £1152.41. I balked at this because I knew I hadn't. I do have a JD Williams account which I have never ever had any repayment problems with. So I was a little confused. This debt was on a previous address of mine from over six years ago. But I never ever had an account with JD Williams until I moved into my present address four years ago. Lowell insist I owe this, I say I do not. I have spoken to them and asked what was bought on that account. They are unable to supply that information. I have said that they need to send me a copy of the original contract which they have yet to do. To be fair I only requested that by phone, should I now send that in writing? Today I get a letter informing that I must pay this. Does anyone have any advice as to my next step? Many thanks

Send a 'prove it' letter asking for a copy of the CCA too.

You could also contact JD Williams by phone to ask them about the account.

Is the 'mysterious' JD Williams credit account listed with any of the three major CRAs?

Are you 100% sure you didn't have an account with any of JD Williams alter-egos ? As well as trading under their own name they have loads of niche sub-names such a Oxendales, Simply Be, Fifty Plus etc...

Could someone else have applied for credit in your name eg a family member, flat mate ?
  • Just heard back from Lowell, they are unable to prove this is my debt after all ( no !!!! Sherlock that's what I have been saying all along!)

Spoke to an idiot that works for them who in spite of there being no evidence to say this is my debt insisted that it is and they will continue to seek payment even though the letter they sent has a balance of £0. They have also said that they will enter this 'debt' on to my credit file, even though after checking none of the CRA's has it on! I think this is scare tactics and I have told them that if the continue to harass me I shall report them to the financial ombudsman. Lowell really are a nasty company.
  • That makes absolutely no sense...how do you mean they cannot prove it?
  • It makes perfect sense.

It’s jusr Lowell matching an account to a name and taking pot luck someone responds and admits to it.
  • Exactly, no proof because I never ever had an account with this company. It is disgusting that I have had to go through the mill with these people.
