Reseal drain cover?

I lifted (what looks like) quite an old manhole cover a while ago whilst cleaning my drains out, however I have never been able to get it to 'sit tight' ever since and we get a horrible woft of the drains coming up most times we flush the loo.

Is there anything you can do to help create a good seal on the cover or is it just best to fit a whole new one?

Make sure the frame is cleaned out properly as the rim of the cover. You can then put plenty of grease into where the cover sits which which help seal it and stop it rusting solid.
You can get special manhole sealing grease if you want, although we used to use anything available when the build was finished. with

Looks fine to me. Just needs a clean out and treatment as above....unless the frame has lost contact with the supporting brickwork and the whiff is getting out where the cement haunching should be.

Thanks. Does anybody know the name of a grease product I could use that I could find in your average hardware store?

Just about any grease will do the job. At a push, even lard.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
