Late Standing Order Caused Overdraft

Hi, I did a search for this but nothing came up.
My boyfriend banks with Natwest and has a standing order set up for the 26th of each month. This money goes into our joint account which is with the Co-op. Our rent is taken from the Co-op on the 1st of each month.
The 26th September standing order didn't go through until the 2nd October. This caused us to go overdrawn when our rent was taken and the Co-op have charged us £25 plus 11p interest.
The Natwest website says that standing orders take two working days, but this particular one took four working days and resulted in the overdraft.
My boyfriend hasn't gone to see them yet. What's the best way to go about getting these charges refunded as it was Natwest's fault that we went overdrawn?

If this is his 'first offence', I'd get confirmation (ie, from his NatWest statement/online screen dump) of the payment instruction/date and take this to show the Co-op. They may refund the charges as a goodwill gesture.
Have you thought about increasing the overdraft facility on the Co-op account?0 -
Okay. I'm not sure when the money left his account. I'll get him to check. So if it left on time then we can show the Co-op and ask for a refund as it was clearly a system fault somewhere. If it left Natwest late, is there anything we can do? Is Natwest accountable for that?
I cancelled our overdraft facility the other month as we hadn't used it for a few years and you have to pay £15 a year for it. Sod's law eh.0 -
If he did not have sufficient money on the 26th some banks have a system whereby they will try every day to see if there is available funds and then send the money on.
Could this be the case ?
If so he could be charged by his own bank for a bounced standing order(even though it would have appeared to have gone through a few days later)0 -
can you get your boyfriend to check that it left his account on 26th September and that all details were correct ie account number and sort code because it should have hit the co op account on the 28th september. If it arrived on the 2nd October then it would have left on the 28th September which was a friday. If natwest has made a keying error then if you have proof of the charges natwest should pay for the error. If it is not then the co op is the right way to go.0
