Neighbours have built a huge shelter in their back garden overlooking ours

  • Thanks for the replies, I will give the council a call and have an informal chat with them. I'm fairly certain any relationship with the neighbour will be ruined if we were to take it any further, but then I would have appreciated the same thought before it was built. At a minimum, we will need to have a friendly chat about the lights though.

Just to answer a couple of questions, it does not touch our house in any way, it's about 8 meters plus away from our house and up a hill at a 45 degree angle from our kitchen. It's probably over 2.5 metres away from our boundary, but less than one metre from another neighbours boundary - it doesn't affect them as much though due to their garden layout, and trees shielding it.

We have discussed planting trees in our garden to block the view, but any tree would have to be about 18 feet tall to block it so this would be a long term solution.

The lights would be pretty difficult to shield as they are the same size as a normal light bulb and there's just so many of them.
Previously these were strung around the perimeter fence which looked nice (and to be honest we have a similar set up with our perimeter fence). but there are just so many of them now clustered in one place so high above our garden.
The lights go on at night and are just left on till midnight ish.

As for asking them to build a shield on one side, I never mentioned that there is a single fence panel on the side that faces us. This is clearly to stop us looking in than anything as it doesn't reach anywhere near the top of the structure or the lights. There is also another standard fence panel which then faces side on to our house at a right angle to the other one which i guess is to block their own view of their greenhouse.
From our side, it's all pretty weird looking as we now have a boundary fence, a fence on the other side of that one that is higher than the boundary fence, a fence panel which reaches higher than that, then this structure which is higher than that.
