Hi,
I have moved last year into a house that have a British Gas smart meter pay as you go. I have attempted comparison websites and it appears there are little choices for moving suppliers.
Most of them would accept credit smart meters, even if they would work like old meters, me supplying the readings, but not Pay as you go smart meters.
I know i can ask British Gas to move to a credit meter, but dependent on credit check, they can actually refuse it.
Any ideas?

Why do you think you cannot switch supplier?

Here are the Smart PPM Change of Supplier (CoS) Principles

British Gas are one of 12 signatories to that at the time of publication (almost 1 year ago)

    Thanks wavelets,
    That is very helpfull.
What i meant is that it gets complicated on energy comparison websites because on your current supplier if you select prepayment it only refers to the meters with keys/cards and not prepay smart meters. I did quotes directly with some of the big suppliers and it is also confusing and very little or no choices come up.
From what i understand, asking a new supplier for a move, British gas would turn the smart Prepay meter into a credit meter on the switchover day, so that it can be taken over by the new supplier.
    Thanks

What’s the best you have found? Do you still pay standing charges for the meter. My mum has a really old PAYG meter on a really old tarrif. I must be able to update it for a cheaper rate?

Its not that simple, maybe the new supplier does nt want the customer on a credit meter because they failed the credit history check . The switch would be blocked and would not continue even in PAYG if the meter was nt compatible with their system. Money has to be spent installing a new meter .
Many smart prepay meters are not compatible with each suppliers prepay systems Secure Liberty meters can t work with BG,EDF, Scot Power, Npower SSE who use either Landis Gyr, Siemens or Elster .The exchange would possibly be blocked. Good news for the losing supplier.
That is what they want to happen, so clever suppliers like Ovo and Utilita who started the smart PAYG off end up with a better chance of keeping their customers chained to them.
They were the first to use Secure Liberty meters which now many smaller suppliers now use
