Electric radiators/ other heating

This is the critical bit, you really need an old-school electrician who will try to fix any faults, rather than someone who will whistle, and then write you up a quote for full replacement of all your heaters.
Electric heaters don't get less efficient with age, they might develop faults, but that is not the same as being inefficient.
Now is not really the right time of year, but I keep an eye out on sites like Freecycle (especially in the Spring) and now have a small collection of oil-filled radiators which I use on E7 overnight to warm up the house when it isn't really cold enough to put on the GCH or on the extra cold Winter days.
Ok, yep, I get that, thanks for the advice! Very true!

My circumstances are a bit different in that in these shoulder months I have spare solar power which it would be good to use rather than export. Fans are noisy but a little oil filled rad I could use in the lounge or more likely bring it upstairs to my office desk. On cold evenings I tend to retreat to in front of the wood burner.
I really need something to take the edge off in the evenings when the NSHs have released their heat so I'll have a look at Argos & Dunelm, thank you.
I'd really like a wood burner! Toasty!
Lucky you!!! 0 -
the convector heaters e.g from Argos are good
i.e A fan and heating element in one portable small unit.0 -

The thing I worry about with the cheapies is how long they'll actually last. Maybe they do end up being cheaper, or maybe a false economy, I don't know. But the Dimplex etc do seem to last well.0 -
There's not a lot to go wrong in a convector heater or even a oil filled radiator and I've had a couple of fan heaters that are years old that have been carted around the countryside in my caravan and one kept on my boat for at least 20 years. Cheapies from either Argos or B&Q, I probably only paid a fiver each for them
Likewise our toaster in the caravan cost £3.99 from Tesco about 10 years ago and still makes excellent toast.
I cannot see the point of spending £100's on a heater that wont perform any better than one for £15 or so from Argos or Dunelm (or even Tesco). You'd have to hope that one that costs 5-10 times more would last 5 -10 times longer but that's seldom the case.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
I agree.
Just a little worried the really cheap ones may be prone to catch fire! (like many things seam to these days! Cars, chargers etc. Ok I've been watching too much fake Britain)
I did happily use one when my boiler broke though0
