New gas meter install

I've had a gas supply run to an empty meter box on my annexe. Putting in new heating/hw shortly and will need a meter fitting.

Any preferences on who people use or should I check the best deals on supply rates at the moment and go with one of them?

I thought meters were installed by Distribution Companies - https://www.eonenergy.com/new-connections/faqs has a map.

Why would anyone on this site want to follow the advice of this site, which presumably chose the name moneysavingexpert.com for a reason?

The link you provide indicates, at least as far as Eon are concerned, that either their Energy Services business or by a third party supplier will install the meter.

But the consumer needs to contact a supplier first, and it is the supplier who will organise the installation

This is further hinted at in respoinse to the question how long it will take to install the meter. The response given is "We’ll provide timings once our quote has been accepted. These can vary depending on the service you need."

Of course, no need to use Eon - there are plenty of suppliers out there to choose from :)

I put the link because it has a map of distribution areas - not because it was Eon. I assume that all suppliers use the same distribution network because it makes a lot more sense than thinking otherwise.

For instance, regardless of who bills me for electricity - if I have a power cut I have to contact Western Power Distribution to find out the problem.

Mutton Geoff, I am not at all sure but think some suppliers charge for new meters and some do not; I do not think any charge for "smart" meters so you might want to check out a few providers' websites and see if you can find one who will install either for free. As far as I know, nPower are one who do but unfortunately I can offer no certainty.

I would have thought the reason for the question was obvious. They are looking to get a new meter fitted, something most consumers don't need to deal with, and something that possibly, some companies are better at organising than others and that price isn't the only factor to consider.

Much in the same way people with pre-pay meters who come to this board wanting to go to credit meters are often advised to switch to EDF to get the meter swapped, before shopping around.

Not sure I understand your comment. Since meter installation is rare for consumers to organise my question was who to go to for the install since some might install for free but have high tariffs or be expensive for install and vv.

I already connected a new gas supply (£300 ish) but opted to share main house water since the water board (or whatever they are called now) wanted over £6,000 for a connection that is all of 20m from the street main.

Not sure how gas utilities can dig the road up and run a pipe for 1/20th of the cost of a water pipe.

Will try a big name firm and see. Will also try the leccy supplier I use for the annexe as it’s already on it’s own supply for wiggly amps.
