Pip

I am son's legal appointee and I applied for PIP for him last September 2017. With lots of waiting I had a phone call from the DWP last week telling me that my son had been awarded Enhanced rate care component. As this was not a DLA to PIP transfer he is due the back payments from last September, then his 4 weekly payment in arrears.

Does anyone know how long it will take the DWP to pay the back payment and start his PIP payments? I think the back payment amount will be under the £6,000 threshold when it means it has to be approved for payment from someone higher up the ladder.

Yes, it will be backdated to the day you started the claim. Payment is usually released the day the decision is made, so it will be 3-4 days after that when payment is received. Great new by the way!

Also, if you claim child tax credits for your son then you need to ring HMRC and tell them about his award because you'll be entitled to the disability element of child tax credits. Providing you tell them within 3 months of the decision, it's backdated to the start of his PIP award.

Was this a Tribunal win? That seems an awful long time to wait after applying?

Back payment of benefits are ignored as capital for 12 months aswell

  • I'm curious to know why this claim has taken 12 months. That's an exceedingly long time.
It will be backdated to the start of the claim yes, so long as forms were returned by deadlines, assessments were attended etc. I mention this with the fact that the claim has taken so long in mind.

A decision letter will be in the post. If you had a call last week then the letter should be delivered very shortly. That will clarify what back payment is to be paid, and when.

Give them a ring in advance of the letter arriving and they'll tell you.

Sometimes the payments arrive before the letters.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
