Do I need home security, let alone for windows?

Options
I am looking to do an A-level project into home security, specifically to do with protecting open windows. I'm keen to find out if anyone is concerned or worried about keeping windows open when the house is unoccupied as it can compromise the security of their home with intruders easily being able to access their home through them.
Some people also like to sleep with bedroom windows open at night and keep them open during the day to cool rooms down even when not in the room during the summer. Do you not feel unsafe doing this? I know there are products available on the market such as security bars and window restrictors but these are normally targeted for child safety purposes.
Alternatively, I'd like to know if people feel it is worth investing in other home security products such as security alarms and CCTV systems, despite not necessarily providing any physical protection against intruders.

Any suggestions or experiences would be much appreciated.

Deterrant is the key, really. Visible cameras and alarm boxes are more likely to deter potential thieves than having nothing.

    It doesn't stop them.

The Nest cameras are relatively cheap, will alert you a trigger of the camera and you can actually talk to people trhough the camera, so if it alerts you and there's a baddy in your garden, you can politely tell them to move on, or something.

I don't like leaving even my little windows open, but sometimes I do. My son accidentally sat on four stink bombs on Friday. We only just got rid of the smell.

I think my dogs barking act as the best detterant, tbh. It puts the postie off.

Most burglars don't want to confront a homeowner - they go for empty properties. So I don't have any problem leaving windows open while I am in.

I close the windows when I go out.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I'm governed by my insurance company. If I leave upstairs windows open, even when not in the house, that's okay and I'm insured. Downstairs windows are okay, too, as long as someone is home.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    .

My personal opinion is yes, one or both of the above.
I am looking at those items at the moment and weighing up the budget.

My personal thinking is to send the burglars and opportunists to the next street - if I have a visible 'in your face' cctv system then an opportunist might think twice (although I do realise a simple hat/hoodie could make it difficult to identify anyone)

With regards to an alarm - When walking the dog, I pass loads of houses with alarms, some look so old that you wonder if they are even working - the newer ones with a backlit bell box look impressive. (not just the blinking LED's but the ones that are slightly illuminated)
How much of a deterrent? I don't know but i'm definitely getting one with a backlit outside box as it looks new and might make them think its quite sophisticated.

I do have a dog however he would probably enthusiastically wag his tail at any intruder and bring him a ball to throw! I do leave his lead on the side in the porch, again just as one of those visible things that might just make them think.

    Hope this helps your studies.

Presumably such a large dog needs long walks....... he's not protecting your home when you're out.
