"Nice photos" is more dependent on the quality of the original image in the first place. You can't polish a turd as they say.

What's your budget? Any brand preference? You can get the more expensive printers like Epson and Canon which are cheaper to run (especially with compatibles) or you can get the cheaper printers like HP which cost more to run. They are also usually all-in-ones so they print, scan, copy, some fax, some have a document feeder and some of them will even wash the dishes. I may have made one of these features up as far as printers are concerned. :)
  • I would ditto the above, epson quality for photos seems to be the best.

Brother printers are cheap to run and produce good results.

Only if you are willing to spend the money on higher end printers that take the extra colours and blacks, low end Epson printers that take the usuall C,MY,BK are no better or worse than any other brand in that bracket. Most current domestic printers will print a half decent photograph, the machines to avoid are the ones that use tri-colour cartridges because you don’t use all the inks at the same rate so once one colour is out the cartridge is useless for printing colour.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

If you are printing photos I guess you might use a lot of ink?????

Ink refills are expensive so might come into the calculation.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

Not had a great deal of advice yet. No recommendations of specific printers that use individual colour cartridges.

That's such a bizarre thing to say. As if anyone would expect their printers to improve their photos.

It is not "bizarre". I used to work in IT support and the number of people who complained their printer was broken because it didn't produce a good quality picture was quite high. In nine time out of ten the problem was nothing to do with the printer it was due to the fact the source of the photo was crap - too dark, too light, full of motion blur or somebody had attacked it with Photoshop.

Mind you nothing beats the "blow a tiny little 200x200px image up to A3 and be able to see the hairs up somebody's nose" thing, which works wonderfully in no end of movies and TV shows but is totally impossible in reality, as it'll just look like an explosion in a Minecraft game.

You are not getting a great deal of advice because it is a loaded question. I have one for you, I would like a car with the performance of a Ferrari, with the price tag and economy of a Prius, that is nice to drive. Any recommendations?

"Nice photos" nice as in cheap, or nice as in quality quality - Pick one because you cant have both.

As already mentioned, the first step of a good printout or photo is a good picture.

This is a good little printer. Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000, but besides that price, you apparently have to keep it it constantly switched on, uses 12 different inks at £50 each, prints about 13 A3 pages before ink runs out, but a lovely output, using the right photo.

Find two cheap sources of ink for a printer - not a deal price, but daily price. Then buy the printer according to the ink.

If you do not use the printer the ink may dry out, and if the printer prints from a head rather than a cartridge then it may mean a new head plus cartridges.

I do not have a working printer. I print a few pages a year at work, but If i need something spacial I go elsewhere. No maintenance, or ink problems. Have paid the bargain price of £1.50 for a black and white page at an internet cafe a five years ago. for a one of page it was expensive, but in the grand scheme of things a bargain.

That doesn't help me as I do print quite often. And still nobody has suggested any printers. I also scan regularly. I forgot to mention that.
