Hello
Me and my wife receive a state pension and housing benefit.
My son has just had a divorce and may be moving back in with us, he has around £15k savings, will his savings affect our pension amount or housing benefits in any way?
Thank you very much for your help.

Is housing benefit the only benefit that either of you claim?
If it is then your housing benefit will be affected.
Your son will be classed as a non dependent. His savings will not be taken into account but any earnings/income will mean a deduction from your housing benefit.
Read here for the details:
https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/housing_benefit/housing_benefit_deductions_when_living_with_non-dependants
However, you will receive a bedroom allowance for your son as part of your housing benefit assessment.
Put your details into the benefits calculator on https://www.turn2us.org.uk to see your entitlement.
You will need to inform your local council of your change of circumstances.
Come back if you need any further help.

I forgot to mention. He hasn't got a proper job here yet as he is moving back down from Scotland, but has a 16 hours a week minimum wage, temporary Christmas job starting when he gets here.0

Thank you very much, I'm off to read the info now.0

Ignore the above info:
There will be no deduction for 6 months regardless of his savings or earnings.0 -

Very good link poppy, do you know if this applies to Council Tax Reduction too? Not sure if Housing Benefit and CTR are the same?0 -
My apologies to the OP. I had forgotten this exemption.
Even if the OP doesn't return then I hope his council will apply the disregard and no harm is done through my incorrect information.0 -

Before 1 April 2014, if you, or your partner, are aged 65 or over and, either a non-dependant comes to live with you or, an existing non-dependant's circumstances change in way that would increase the non-dependant deduction to be made in your CTR calculation, you must report the change, but the deduction will not be increased until 26 weeks after the change. If a non-dependant comes to live with you or, an existing non-dependant's circumstances change on or after 1 April 2014, you must report the change and it will affect your CTR from the date of the change.0 -
It's called Non Dependant deduction delay and it's only made if there is a deduction to be made.
