  • Another reply from me: when I met a mortgage advisor on Monday she happened to mention that she'd just had to tell a client of hers that her mortgage had been declined because the property was above a commercial premises :(

I used to live next to a solicitors. Things to note were cars arriving and leaving thoughout the day, the large front door was prone to catch the wind and slam, staff stood outside smoking on their breaks. On the plus side it was fun watching the solicitor try to persuade local children not to cycle up and down the front steps.
  • I have lived above the pub. It was nightmare.
  • I live two floors above a gents hairdressers in one unit and religious organization in the other. Earlier an applicant had tried to change the usage on the units to allow for a bar plus after hours nightclub. It went through the Council's planning process and fortunately was denied. We were all stressed for almost a year during that time and usage changes do happen.

Our biggest problem is that the hairdresser seemed to have a rule to not smoke in front of their entrance so their employees would smoke in front of ours and leave their cigarette ends there. One of the flats sent a note and it soon stopped, so could have worse neighbors at the end of the day.
  • I currently live above a shop and have done so for a number of years. Never had any issues relating to the shops, if anything it's ridiculously convenient for if you need to grab the missing ingredient for dinner! When I went through my mortgage broker they had 3 lenders which would lend on it. So even though it narrows the options of mortgage lenders it certainly doesn't close the gates entirely.
