Credit card charges by retailer ?

Options
I want to buy a vehicle, for £7,000, and pay with my credit card. The retailer wants to charge me £40 per £1,000 if I pay with the credit card, “because that’s what it costs them” or there’s no charge for banks transfer or debt card payment.
Is this allowed ?
I was under the impression that these fees were illegal now ?

thanks

Yes, its illegal now and if you wanted to take it further you would need to speak to Trading Standards but on the other hand the retailer is also under of obligation to accept/let you pay by credit card if they don't want to.

If you're paying to benefit from Section 75 protection than you could pay £100 on the credit card and the rest via alternative means.
  • In the Netherlands - Valkenburg - in November the hotel wanted me to pay 3% extra for using a credit card. I went to the Tourist office to see if they could. The tourist office confirmed there is an EU Directive stopping retailers charging extra for paying by credit card but
"it is unenforceable in the Netherlands"

    What to do??

While there is indeed the EU PSD2 directive prohibiting credit card surcharges (for personal cards), some countries still haven't enacted this into national law, one of which is the Netherlands, according to http://www.hoganlovellspayments.com/PSD2.

So I don't think you have any comeback as the hotel would be compliant with still-prevailing Dutch legislation in levying a surcharge....

    Tell them it's now illegal.

I paid for my last vehicle in April with a credit card.

Are you perhaps answering OP's question from back in September, that was already answered within 12 minutes of being asked (adequately enough that OP hasn't been back on the forum since)?
