speakers specification and compatability query

I would like to buy some speakers, but after looking at the specifications, I am confused.
I have found these specs from a website (see below), and I was wondering what they are mean or about. When I compare speakers to see which one is better, do I look at the total FTC power or the total peak power, or both?
Total FTC power: 70 watts RMS
Total peak power: 140 watts
One more thing, if I buy a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker for my laptop, would it work? If not, I am happy to go with 2.1 speakers.
Hope you get what I mean. Suggestions appreciated.

RMS is the value you should be looking at.
as for the laptop I wouldn't bother unless you only ever use it in the same place, the idea of a laptop is it can be moved so doesn't take up any space the speakers are you going to put them away each time you use the thing too? Use headphones or something if the built in speakers aren't up to much.0 -

Thanks for your reply.
I have a laptop, and at uni. The speakers in the laptop aren't good. That's why I want external speakers.0
