Convertible roof broke on first day of purchase

Can anyone help on my rights with a garage just to be prepared?

Stupidly paid in cash (although the garage does seem reasonable and fair but just to cover my back) we had a £200 receipt for the deposit with the full car price of £2k listed but when we paid the rest in cash today wasn't given any receipt...

Either way, I have driven it an hour away from the garage and it is currently un drivable due to the roof being stuck 50/50. Can't get it up/down manually as the place you need to get to is in the boot which half the roof is in the way off...(and then you need screw drivers etc anyway to do it)

I think the bigger problem for now is I've had to leave it on my Dad's driveway so it's undrivable and an hour away from the garage...it does have a months warranty but do I have to pay to get it to them now?
People don't know what they want until you show them.

Don't suppose you are in the AA/RAC etc as they could maybe get the roof back up or recover you to the garage as it is broken down at your
    Dad's place?

You will have to get it to the garage unless they are kind enough to send someone over who lives nearby maybe, as it isn't their fault you live so far away.

Rights wise you could reject it, but realistically give them a chance to fix it as presumably you wanted the car in the first place.

Convertible roofs often go wrong, as they are quite complex in terms of switches, which are a simple fix, but annoying.

Have a look on youtube to see if there is something you can do to get it back up.

Presumably an electric roof. Check the fuses and ask on an owners forum, it might be a common fault with an easy fix.

I dont know what car it is however on alot of them if you have stuff in the boot or you havent pulled the safety net over any stuff you have in the boot the roof wont work or will stick etc. However could be that it hasnt been used in ages and is part seized. If however its more serious it could well be uneconomical to repair it. I would if thats the case ask for a full refund.

Are you sure all the things are in place for the roof to work - handbrake on ect ( do it a couple of time to make sure it is not a stuck sensor.

I dont think you have been stupid to pay cash for it.

What car is it? There must be a way to get the roof closed without using electric, have you looked in the owners manual?

Convertibles are great - I'm on my 4th now but they all come with their own idiosyncrasies. Biggest lesson for me is always find out how the roof works (inc the manual procedure for it) before you start driving it. If the dealer can't show you how it works they're unlikely to be able to fix it when (not if) the time comes. That also proves to you that the tools needed to do the job are still in the car (there's a great market on Ebay for Audi roof keys which dealers rarely check for when you trade a car in ;)). AA/RAC cover is great until it becomes a regular occurrence and most after-market warranties will give little, if any, cover for roof issues.

If you tell us which model/age people may offer help

How did it stick? you weren't driving it while trying to open the roof were you? ie, you were parked up? as said though - tell us what the car is and we might be able to help.
