Possible fraud

Hello,

I received a new debit card in the post today, from my bank (Halifax), with my name on it, my sort code, but an account number I didn't recognise. I haven't applied for any new accounts recently.

I phoned Halifax and after a long wait on hold they said this appeared to be application fraud, and that I'd need to wait 48 hours for someone to tell me what happens next.

I've run a quick credit check on myself (using the MSE Credit Club thing) and nothing untoward shows up.

The thing I don't get is this: what's the angle of attack for the fraudster? Why open a new current account in my name?

And should I be doing anything else at this point to remediate this?

Thanks!

Sam

Sorry I put the wrong address, can you resend to 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam.

Being serious, sounds more like a mess up at their end, unless theres a sophisticated fraud going on where someone looks to intercept the card before it gets to you.

Do you live somewhere the post is accessible like a flat where all the post is left on a table in the hall ?
  • Haha, thanks for the reply!

Yes, I live in a flat in a house where the post is stored in a communal area (but still behind a locked door).

Halifax said a new account had recently been opened in my name and said it was fraud. It could be an error on their side, I'm very prepared to believe that!

Did you get a letter similar to this?

  • No, I've only had a phone conversation with Halifax so far. But that letter is useful - it looks exactly like what's happened here.

I had something similar a few years ago, had a Barclays card and then a current account appeared soon after, questioned it and reported it as fraud, they removed the credit search soon after and put a CIFAS marker on.

Aside an error there are at least two similar fraud possibilities here, if the post is accessible to all, perhaps being placed ona hall table, either someone in one of the other flats or the postman was planning to apply for a new card and then intercept all the letters relating to this including the one containing new card,so you'd have no idea one had been taken out and they would have several months of spending.
