Newly qualified young driver - building up no claims bonus

Hi there

My son has just passed his driving test but won't be getting a car of his own for a few years. Are there any insurance policies which allow him to build up no claims bonus whilst being a named driver on my policy?

(Preferably a policy which also has telemetric discounts.)

TIA

There are policies which you can accrue no claimed bonus as named driver, but only if you take out a new policy with them when you think you have accrued enough no claims bonus years, may not be money saving as your stuck to that insurer for at least 1 year

Consult a car insurance broker, Not Swinton

  • Thank you csgohan4 - a friend had told me that her daughter had earned no claims as a named driver on her policy so I was pretty sure it was possible but I haven't been able to find anything online. Any recommendations for brokers?

"Sorry, but no. Only the policyholder can earn a full no-claims bonus.

That said, if you’re a named driver looking to buy your own car, speak to the insurance provider covering the car you currently drive. Some insurers offer introductory named driver bonuses for those previously insured with them."

Ask your friend what company she went with.

But I think you are missing the point.

You can build up 'no claims' if you want to call it that but will have to take out a policy with the same company you are a named driver with when you get your own car.

It is not a true no claims as it cannot be used with another company and that company may well charge more than an open market quote.

  • Oh I see what you mean PoppyOscar - I had not understood that from your previous post. Thank you. I think csgohan4 is right in saying that I need to consult a broker - the generic information online is insufficient in terms of this situation. Thank you

A quick search on google shows an initial three companies that give named driver no claims bonus.....they were Admiral , Coop and Sainsbury's.....there will probably be many more.
You need to check with the individual insurers before buying but as has previously been said....this no claims isn't universal and would only be valid with the insurer it was earned with.

but after 1 year they are transferable are they not? As long you took out a separate policy. Of course you could wait 5 years before taking out a sole policy, but it may not be competitive to do so
