I visit The Hague regularly and visited the gardens a couple of years ago. We got the train from Den Haag (The Hague) to Leiden and there were special buses direct to the Keukenhof. The whole journey took about an hour.

The Hague is a really lovely city as is Leiden so perhaps staying around there would be worth looking into.
