Micro Card Advice Required Please

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 compact phone which I wish to use to try and take some videos.

OK, it's quite an old phone now .. I think I've had it for about 4 years, but it works fine, so why change it?

Anyway, I have been told that I should get a memory card to store the videos on, which I do know the phone will accept. I've never used a memory car, but it seems the logical type of system, adding extra memory to a phone if / when needed.

There seem so many to choose from. Obviously the memory size is not difficult to understand, but what about class sizes and whats SD, SDHC etc

Help !

Will my phone accept any card, well any micro card ?

Or are some very recent cards too advanced for the phone ?

It'll take a 256GB Samsung Evo microSD card if you really need the space for around £60 or so. It'll be reusable in future phones too.

The class sizes and SD/SDXC stuff just refers to the maximum capacity and speed when that particular card came to market so SDXC has a greater headroom for capacity and speed than SD for instance. Always go for the latest version unless money is really tight as there's not that much in it and you'll be more future proof.

Put simply, overall reading/writing speed for video, recognised in MB/s. For applications, the ability to carry out many operations per second, recognised as IOPS.

There is no saving in buying the higher capacity device and they likely do not need 256 GB right now.
256 GB microSD cards will be much cheaper in the future and by the time they do need 256GB in the years to come, it is more likely to fail.
If it fails they could lose up 256 GB worth of data.

Like UFS cards will be prominent in the future, as they are much faster. So they won't be future-proofing.

So better to buy the capacity that they need now.

Presuming they're happy to keep swapping cards in and out all of the time. Of course doing it out "in the field" so to speak could be a problem if they don't have the little doo-hickey to pop the tray out.

Come on, surely you can do better than that? Even at a 4k at 30fps setting, it will utilise 24.8 GB over an hour.
1080p @ 60fps 13.5 GB per hour
1080p @ 30 fps 7.65 GB per hour

So I'm confident that a 64GB card will present no issue. Ridiculous to pay for a 256 GB card and suggest future-proofing, when a 64GB card will do.

If I have survived about 4 years without a card, I'm sure it will be a while before I need anything more than 64GB

I don't know enough about data use for videos but I don't really see me, at least in my early days of video filming to be needing so much memory while out 'n about.

If I like the video idea I can always opt for a new phone, or I suppose even a camera .. I know the Canon GX7 is very popular.

I suppose I'll just have to walk so to speak with my existing phone before I consider trying to run.
