Best chimney pots to counter downdraughts?

All this talk of open fires reminded me.
A rural bungalow located below a hillside suffering with smoke blowing back into the room.
It needs a new pot installing so can anyone advise on which shapes of chimney pot give the best protection against wind blowing downwards? Since it is a short flue, presumably the draw isnt very strong so the pot would also need to be low drag for the exiting smoke too? Thanks for any advice.

A marcone pot is a popular type type of anti downdraught pot, or sometimes a Dovecote top is used.
If the cause is a poor draw by a short flue draught inducing cowl can be fitted. A throat restrictor can also help.
It depends on whether the cause is the wind currents forcing the smoke down, or if the position of the windows and doors causes the pressure to stop the pull of the flue.0 -
I think you need a chimney cowl.0

Thank you for the suggestions, will look into those. It did have a cowl on the past but a chimney fire wrecked it. Cant remember the owners saying whether it worked or not. Anyway since it needs a new pot i thought it would be good to fit a pot designed for the particular problem. Cheers0

When you replace the pot, especially if it's a tall one like the Marcone, build it into the stack rather than using just the flaunching to hold it in place. too many tall pots can be seen leaning over when there is only a few inches of sand/cement holding them in place
Regs require 25% of the pot to be built in.0 -
^ Good to know, thanks.0
