Getting rid of Hive system?

I posted earlier today about some Hive queries but on more research I’ve decided I want rid! It’s scary!

Does anyone know how easy and costly it is to get rid of it and put a regular thermostat back in? I.e. take back control of my boiler! I can’t seem to find anything online about it which makes me wonder if it’s even possible?! Surely?! Would a gas/plumbing engineer know?

Any help appreciated! Thanks

You would just have to buy a suitable control unit for your system. They have a universal mount so swapping in a different unit should be easy.

    Standard plumbing job
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • What does it involve exactly? Just replacing the hive sensor unit with a regular thermostat, e.g. Honeywell or something?

You would need to replace both the sensor and the controller unit on the boiler. Probably about an hours labour for a competent plumber.

Yes but presumably you could just use the Hive unit in the most basic way if that is all you want? In other words turn the heat on when the room the thermostat is in gets below a certain temperature? Once set nothing says you have to talk to it with your phone or use any other functions.

I don't quite see what you gain by going to the expense of replacing it.

However if you do I expect the bits you no longer want would sell easily enough on Gumtree or fleaBay.

When I had Hive installed by BG the fitter left the original parts together with instructions on how to reinstall. It helped as I already had a wifi thermostat with my Viessmann boiler.

Because its so temperamental. The previous owners of the house we bought left us their hub, but we can't simply deregister it and set up our own account, no we have to buy a brand new hub = con. We are using it anyway (without phone control) and despite setting a programme, the boiler just does what it wants, sometimes our boiler is red hot in the middle of the night and comes on at random times when we haven't set it to.

The thermostat simply doesn't work on its own without the hub, its designed to work with the hub, which is no good. I think its relying too much on technology for technologies sake. I want rid and be able to control the heating in the old fashioned way!

In my opinion, you might be better replacing with a nest. The wiring will already be there and it'll be literally plug and play :)

Have no problems with mine. Bought outright from BG whilst I was a customer and switched suppliers twice since without any problems. I like the iPad app and the portable thermostat, the wireless one that came with the Viessmann boiler was far too technical for me to set up and even the installer just left on manual.
