I also felt really good about buying this house because of the way it all worked out... I cleaned a house for a couple up in mid-argyll. They spoke of having a second house down in Dumbarton that they were selling... they'd bought an ex-council house it to be able to be near their grandchildren. Their daughter was moving, they knew they'd make money, and they wanted to sell. Around the same time, I'd started to look. At some point, I realized that the house they were selling was one of the ones on my list of possibilities. I went into the EA's and asked for "Anything mortgageable with at least two bedrooms... by the way, are you selling Mrs. M's house?" "Yes, this is the one, right here." I drove by to have a look and thought, "Well, it looks alright." I called her, she gave me the keys to have "a good poke around" and we ended up arriving at a price privately, which meant we didn't have to go through the Scottish bidding process. THAT was a huge relief - we would have offered more. ;)

It's on a rather rough estate - but she's a nice, educated woman with good taste and sense. She and her husband assured us that they were happy and comfortable, there, and were also very upfront about warning us about certain problem neighbors. They're a very religious couple and they felt strongly that, after much prayer, God had arranged the right buyer. We'd been praying, too, and it all just felt "right." Not to sound like loony people or anything, but that is how it felt.

They were a joy to deal with - when our lender acted silly at the last minute, they didn't get cross or charge us interest for the week we were in breach of contract. In fact, in the beginning of the process, when we were getting annoyed with our IFA, she put in a call and got someone else for us.

Then, they offered us all sorts of furnishings, including the refrigerator, a sofa, and a dining suite. It all came in quite handy.

So, it all went so smoothly and happily, that I guess that was worth something, right?

£62,000 got us a mid-terrace two-bedroom in the town we wanted. We're happy.

Blimey! Where do you live? That would cost at least £180k where I live!

Last year I bought a new laptop (the one on which I am writing this).

Top of the range hp £869

    6 months later, the b*stard was £599

I knew it was going to get cheaper, but I needed it there and then.

think of your house like that - a home that you need to live in.

    best wishes

#1. The people that run these "sell your house and rent back" companies are generally lying thieves and are best avoided

#2. This time next year house prices in general will be lower than they are now

#3. Cheap houses are a good thing not a bad thing

{I need to stop looking at share prices}

...it's just 'bricks and mortar' they say, but it's more than that. It's not a cliché that rings true

  • Look on the bright side. If the price keeps falling, in a few years you will be able to trade up to a 4 bed with relative ease.

Enjoy your house for the now.

We are on the brink of buying at the peak also - we have just waited too long living in small flats while saving for a deposit....

Its also worth remebering that "crashes" take 3-5 years to bottom out and the 3-5 years to recover. We just arent prepared to live in rented accomodation for that long.

And like Romani says, even if prices do fall by 50%, then the next place is going to be 50% cheaper anyway! Its a win win situation.... err...
