Growing sweetcorn
Options
Probably a little late to post this one but read in our local paper today of an allotment grower's despair because all his sweetcorn hobs had been stripped bare by rats. He said that some people had been placing plastic bottles over the small cobs as they grow to protect them, so a tip to bear in mind for next year and save a few bottles now (before one-use plastic bottles possibly get banned in the campaign to abolish plastic wherever possible)
I haven't been plagued by rats this year but wood pigeons are a real plague. I protect my greens with netting but the plants eventually grow up through them and the birds just balance on the top and peck all the fresh shoots growing through.
