Best way to light a fire in a small woodburning stove.

I save the fallen pine cones from my tree in my garden and use that for kindling! very MSE!!0

Some pretty long-winded methods going on here. I just break up a couple of firelighters, chuck them in and fire them up. Then literally toss in a hand full of kindling and stick something a bit bigger on top. Sit back and relax.
Maybe mines just an easy starter!
I did used to spend a lot longer being more precise about it, but realised it's more about the catalyst you go for.0 -
It's less important with a stove than an open fire, as the smoke won't enter the room.
Can't get away with it when it's open air.0 -
I must say that I have never found ours difficult to light. Lots of screwed up paper and card, a bit of kindling and a couple of logs on top. All vents open at take off.Je suis sabot...0

Lots of people cheating with firelighters and gas :rotfl: If you build your newspaper and kindling up well enough you should be able to just drop one match in, job done. If I wasted two matches on one fire it would give me the hump! Lol0

Being tight, I use 1/2 or 1/4 of a firelighter, any small pieces of wood I have kicking around and some less substantial logs like willow to do the lighting. I never have to open up the vents fully. Then, when it's going, about 5 minutes later, put on a hardwood log or two and close it to the usual sort of setting.
However, in winter, when the sun's hiding, it might stay in for a week, non-stop.
Title says "small wood burning stove," which is what I have, though my sweep says it's too much at 5kW. Not when it's heating half the house, it isn't!0 -

Oh, a purist!
Ah, but do you create your own wood?
I don't begrudge half a firelighter when most of my wood's self -generated, one way or another.I wouldn't say 'free,' though, 'cos a good chain saw and its maintenance certainly isnt.

No I generally buy it in unseasoned and split and stack it for the following year (or one aftet that) l would love to process my own but unfortunately dont have the time.
In fact I dont even have a stove anymore now I have moved house:(0 -

Fortunately, half of mine are payment in lieu of rent for land and animal husbandry, so it's not too bad and I get some variety in the work.0
