E: 18/10 Win a 1-hour Real Tennis lesson at Jesmond Dene, Newcastle
reg/login with Living North
Why not try your hand at one of the western world’s oldest ball games: Real Tennis. In the heart of Jesmond along Matthew Bank is a strange looking building housing a Real Tennis court. The extraordinary sporting facility was built in 1894 by the wealthy industrialist Sir Andrew Noble and is one of only 46 Real Tennis courts left in the world – and the only one in the North of England. But what is Real Tennis?
The more familiar game of lawn tennis being a direct descendant of Real Tennis, which dates back over 800 years, this game has been described as a mixture of squash, chess and tennis all in one. The ball can be played off walls and sloping roofs called penthouses, and they also employ a handicap system which penalises experienced players, allowing all levels to play against each other.
Living North have teamed up with Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club to offer one lucky reader a chance to win a free one-hour Real Tennis lesson, and a £50 discount on an annual membership for the club – so you can save when trying your hand at a brand new ball game.
