DPF/DMF issues on any vaguely-modern diesel are a simple fact of life.

Only if you've bought one for the wrong type of usage. My experience of over 175,000 miles done over the last decade with two cars has given me no such problems. Car 1 was on 168k on original DMF and clutch when I sold it, current car is on 136k on original clutch, DMF and DPF filter. Both hardly did any town driving but spent the majority of the mileage doing a 60 mile round trip commute to work on rural A roads.

The OP currently splits their annual 8-10k total between two cars, remember?

Neither of us need the car for work. We live in Cornwall which is difficult to get around without a car and we regularly go to the beach surfing.

So would you rather be surfing or working to pay for a better car? I can understand the need for extra space, but the extra comfort for long runs..?

I'm a skier and my long runs to and from the Alps have been in a Fiesta, Fabia and currently a Hyundai i20, all with a few years on them. Next time we're going in my GFs car based van so we can bring back more wine and cheese, plus it's got cruise control!

None of them ever gave me problems; the original 9 year old battery on the Hyundai recently needed replacing (and it's embarrassing breaking down at level crossing gates!), and the most expensive was £4k.

So treat yourselves to new wet suits and spend as little as possible on the car!
