Yeah - I worked for a large well-known supermarket, they used to only let you have full weeks off, nothing less...nothing more in a lot of cases either which was difficult as my parents still wanted to take me on two-week summer holidays. Ended up pulling a few sickies there in my time lol.
How does that work with 28 days holiday though :)

Flights are cheaper mid week etc

Not necessarily. Destinations which are used by business travellers as well as tourists frequently have cheaper flights at the weekend than midweek.

Seems a bit overly strict - surely they could cope with someone having 1 day off with sufficient notice? So if someone has a wedding to go to they need to book a whole week off?!

Having such a strict policy will most likely lead people pulling sickies if they want a day off, like you mention.

I was on a 'student' contract...yep 20 years ago they used to do this. One hourly rate for full time, one for part time and the lowest rate for 'students'. It was an unwritten rule that students didn't really take their holidays (they were unpaid anyway).

All for £2.19 per hour ! Time and a fifth on Sundays though...
