Holidays

Can an employer force/insist that if you take 1 or 2 weeks holiday it must start on a monday.......mate of mine has been told by his boss that this it is company policy, which doesn't make sense if your booking flights
I've told him his company is trying it on but he's adamant its correct

Employers can dictate when leave is taken. They could even insist he takes every Monday off if they wished. However most companies are at least more flexible when it comes to leave. If he doesn't like it then probably best looking for another job.

As above, he is right and you are wrong I'm afraid.

The only exception might be if there is a contractual agreement in place allowing a particular holiday booking procedure and this is being ignored. Although even then how easy or wise it would be to fight it is another matter.

Otherwise, taken literally, the employer could decide to close for 28 days per year and allow no other holiday at all. Might struggle to recruit and retain staff but though!
  • Yeah agreed.

I worked in a hotel once that closed for two weeks in January and therefore we had to keep two weeks holidays to cover that period otherwise it was unpaid leave.

it makes sense if you are organising shifts and workloads. The company doesn't care about fights unless they run an airline.

What does it actually say in his contract/employer's handbook?

Why doesn't it make sense? Planes fly on Saturday and Sunday too. Finish work on Friday, fly Saturday, return following Saturday and back to work on the Monday - one week off work and a seven night holiday.

But that's no concern of the employer. If the dates don't work well for the employee then they always have the option of taking 2 weeks off to get 1 week holiday on the dates they prefer.

Yeah - I worked for a large well-known supermarket, they used to only let you have full weeks off, nothing less...nothing more in a lot of cases either which was difficult as my parents still wanted to take me on two-week summer holidays. Ended up pulling a few sickies there in my time lol.
