PC for Work

Options
Hello all

I run a company from home , and as we get busier my current all in one PC seems to be not up to the task , we run windoes 10 , sage, email , browsers etc but it just seem laggy and its getting on my nerves , it is 4gb ram , 1.5 processor (which i suspect is the issue) pentium j4205

I think i need a traditional tower system for maximum power and my budget is about £300 ideally including a monitor , has anyone got any pointers or tips please?

Many thanks

Buy an used, ex business quality machine.

Loads on ebay. An i5, 8GB RAM and an SSD and running Win10. I'd be looking for no less than a 256GB SSD. Probably Dell Optiplex or HP. Find as young a one as you can for the budget. Lots of used monitors about too.

My latest one (i've it 2 years so far) is an i3 Dell with 8GB RAM and i've added a 500GB SSD to it. I think it was 4 ish years old when i got it. Will do me for years yet.

Probably minimum spec for a desktop is i5, 4GB RAM, 120gb SSD but the difference in +4GB RAM and +120GB SSD will be minimal.
  • When you say laggy - is it the PC itself that is slow or your internet connection? Because that will have two different solutions.

Assuming you don't already have a SSD, swapping out your drive for one will almost always increase performance. A fresh install of whichever version of Windows you are using to get rid of any unwanted programs hogging system resources may also help. This could be a way to improve performance on the cheap.

Otherwise there are plenty of second hand systems available online if you know where to look (eBay is always a good start as suggested above). Might also be a bargain to be had at a local computer fair, or an ex-office supply company.
  • If its for a business I would maybe go for a refurbished machine with a warranty available. Look at the Encore PC co who have hundreds and where you can add a monitor and choose other options. Example:

All In One is no good. But swapping the slow HDD for SSD would help. What is the model number?
A second hand business machine as indicated, in conjunction with a large FHD IPS monitor. Perhaps £120 or less for a 24" FHD IPS monitor, leaving £180 for the PC. Easily achieved.
