I can just fit a space saver under the floor of my boot. A standard size wheel would raise the whole boot floor by 4 inches at least.
I'd put the full size one I'd taken off on the back seat until I got home.0 -

Well on one car I had, the instructions if it was a rear tyre that had the puncture, was to put the space saver on the front tyre, put the front tyre onto the back wheel, then put the front wheel in the boot. (Front tyre was smaller.)“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Which expensive car was it that if you got a puncture and fitted the spacesaver, you had to either leave the passenger behind and take it home on the seat, or leave the original wheel behind, as it wouldn't fit in the storage space? (Or leave the passenger behind as well as the wheel to look after it until you could come back in another car to collect both)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Because my MX-5 had a Torsen LSD, it was not permitted to use the space saver on the rear axle. With a rear puncture, you were supposed tothat sounds convenient- put the space saver on the front, and then
- put the spare front wheel on the rear, and then
- the punctured rear wheel could go anywhere your imagination allowed, but basically either the passenger seat or the boot (and hope you didn't have much luggage).

Volvo V60. And I'm sure many others.0 -
Half of the reason for the move to not having a spare is quite simply the size of many modern wheel and tyre combos.0

Friend of mine had an Audi TT 2 seater, and upon getting a flat had to put the space saver on and drive home with the full size wheel on the passenger seat. Seems to be a pretty common thing, but you don't hear about it much because big punctures aren't very common these days0
