Interesting and thanks for the suggestion - right size etc and affordable. But at that age it would have a DPF, no? Not a show-stopper, but a definite negative.
.
If it has it causes no issues.
When I got it in 2016 I was commuting 60miles each way on motorways but for the last 18months I have done short trips & it has never missed a beat & flew through the MOT.0 -
Just to complete the circle ...
I have sold the RR and am now the proud owner of a Golf Plus (basically a Mk 5 Golf with a taller roof). It's the base spec and has the 1.9 Tdi, which I am told is a good engine. It's fast enough, comfy enough and in terms of toys it has the basics but nothing too elaborate. In looks it is a bit of a Plain Jane, not as handsome as a Golf, but it came with a towbar and was a good price. Insurance and tax are cheaper, and it's doing mid-40s mpg. It's clean, tidy and with a good service history, so I am pretty pleased with it. Thanks to everyone for suggestions. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
OP you've mentioned focus several times. Maybe you need a focus? Very vanilla car does everything you need without any interesting quirks and can get fixed anywhere.0

Sorry, forgot to mention mileage. I'll probably be doing about 6-8k a year, and the motorway trips (250 one-way, 500 round)every few weeks.
When you sit down and do the maths taking into account the cost/depreciation of the new car it usually ends up costing more for that than you save on fuel. I own two cars, I do 17,000 miles a year.
Car 1: Mondeo TDCI, average 55MPG
Car 2: MX5, average 37MPG.
If I do all the mileage in the Mondeo at a cost of £6.22 a gallon it costs me £2046 in fuel.
If I do all the mileage in the MX5 which returns 18MPG less than the Mondeo it costs me £2692 a year.
A difference of 18MPG over 17,000 miles costs me just an additional £646 a year. Therefore if I only owned a car that did 37MPG and bought a new(er) one that did 55MPG to replace it the cost of the car/depreciation would more than wipe out the savings I'd make on fuel. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
