How do you catch a bat?

This one may solve itself, but meanwhile, any useful suggestions.
A bat has somehow got into my spare bedroom. It must have been brought in by one of the cats. First I heard a loud bump upstairs so went to look thinking a cat had knocked something over. Then I saw the bat flying in circles.
The only opening window is a small awning type at the top, about 3 feet x 1 foot, but while I stood watching the bat showed no inclination to head toward the opening. I'm not keen on leaving the window fully open all night either, and partially open won't make for such a good escape route.
As I'm writing the it's decided to take a break and is hanging in the corner. If it's still there when I go back up I'll see if I can cover it with a shoe box & move it to the open window, but failing that I'd welcome suggestions.
The cats are, much to their disgust, currently shut out of the room.

I'm quite pleased to read that there is a national bat helpline and Bat Advice Officers. Although it doesn't say what times it operates. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Useful, Thanks. Good to know I made the correct decision (open window & closed door).
Fingers crossed it did manage to find the open window. I was unsure if it would as there's a bright street light at the other side of the road that shines right in.
It was still resting when I went back up, so I decided to grab the camera and try & get another pic, otherwise no one's going to believe me (I can already hear the comment 'bats in the belfry':p), but it had started flying again when I got back. The last I heard it was near the window, though I didn't actually see it go out. I've hopefully checked any nearby hiding places, so if there's no sign when I go to bed I'll shut the window.
It made for an entertaining evening anyway. My neighbour is mad on bats (just bought a bat box hoping that one or two of the locals will take up residence) so she was quite happy when I invited her round to watch.0
