Water dripping sound inside wall...

No sign of leaks but only happens when I turn the heating on. It’s a constant drip, drip sound. We have a radiator in the lounge and it sounds like it’s water dripping from lounge ceiling to floor.

It’s the most annoying sound, driving everyone mad!

Anyone had this before as it’s so annoying.

Are you sure it's not expansion noise from the radiator heating up? It can often be remedied by removing the radiator and padding the mounting hooks, but often the sound isn't coming from the radiator, but a pipe leading in or out.

I agree with the above. We have a similar, short-term noise in the attic above a bedroom when the heating fires-up. Its just the pipe expanding where it bears against a joist or a clip.

I could go up there, remove the insulation, try to work out where it is, and do things by trial and error till it stops, but.....well, life's short enough already!

    Thanks both.

We’ve spoken to people and they also say it’s where the pipes are expanding when the heating comes on.

If it wasn’t the lounge, right next to the sofa I’d let it go but, it’s continuous and driving us mad haha!

I think we are hoping to get the pipes “re- lagged” (if that’s even a word!)

You'll probably find that there's no lagging; I've yet to do any work on a house where the fitters had bothered.

My last house sounded like ricocheting bullets for 10 minutes when the heating kicked in; much like Dave I could never be bothered to pull up the floor.

Pipes expanding/contracting sounds more like a metallic tick with a slight ring to it (on my system it did...). The noise only disappeared after I chased the pipes in to the wall and sleeved them in plastic conduit - The pipes still expand & contract, but there are no clips for the long runs to rub against.

Surprisingly our current 1970s house there is lagging around the pipes where they go through the joists. We get a slight ticking in the hall where the pipe passes through some polystyrene cornicing but that's all.

Our new house (1960s) which is currently rented out has noisy bullets. We located one to a back bedroom, took the board up, removed the bent nail holding the pipe which was the source of the noise, lagged it, OH put the board back down and promptly drilled through the pipe...... I think we'll have to be pulling boards up again when we move there to sort the rest of the noise, I can't believe people have been putting up with it for over 50 years.
