I don't think so but the mute function they all have gives the same result.

My Tom Tom Go6000 has a big 6" screen and gives voice instructions when using a selected route but obviously not if you're just using it as a rolling map. The latest online update changed the basic voices installed, the default "Serena" now gives not only junction instructions but also the name of the road your are about to join!
Downsides I've found to the Tom Tom are :
1. Online update can take forever if it's the full maps update.
2. You use the online route planner to choose your preferred route A to B (rather than their suggested route). Download the route onto your satnav, select it and set off, only to find it's using their suggested route rather than your modified one!

Thank you Chrishazle, that is very useful. I think updates/preferred route issues is unlikely to be a big downside because I strongly suspect my mother won't have any idea the device would be capable of (or need) updating and she would just accept whatever suggested route.

I also rather suspect that the number of times per annum she is likely to use the Sat Nav could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Fortunately, she is sufficiently flush that it doesn't matter if all she ends up doing is purchasing a £200 car ornament!

I've got some ideas now (thanks everyone!) and can discuss options with my Mum.
