You get the same rights as you do for any other second hand goods, no more, no less. One thing that will not be covered though is having to pay someone to replace the replacement engine.

At £1500 you're not far away from the cost of a very good reconditioned engine or even new depending on the car. I certainly wouldn't be paying £1500 for a used engine unless it was for something exotic. If it was a run of the mill family car or small hatch, maybe a few hundred quid at the most.

  • Used engines are an easy way to get stung.

A lad I work with bought a refurbished (Supposedly) engine for his Vauxhall Astra, because his head gasket had gone on the original.

When the replacement turned up to his mechanics and they inspected it, it also had cracks around the head.

The engine he bought cost him about £1800. The repair work to get it skimmed and rebuilt was almost that again.

The seller cut him off. Blocked his phone number, ignored emails and letters. I believe the guy at work is now looking to take the seller to a small claims court to recoup the cost & losses.

In all honesty, unless the car is rare or exotic a new engine is pretty much a gamble and waste of time if you are paying for it yourself. It's a bit different if you are covered by a manufacturer warranty, as it's free and the engine you get will be new or at least subject to some form of testing and QC. 2nd hand....you are paying for someone else's problem.

Only if it doesn't turn up; not if its just a crap engine
