Thunderbird deleted emails reappearing

Options
I have been using Thunderbird for several months, and in the main the programme works well.

I have GMail and Hotmail set up, and delete most emails when read, then delete from the 'deleted' folder. However, often the deleted emails reappear, and have to be deleted again.

Have checked Thunderbird support, and they suggest compacting the files to solve the problem. Have done this, but doesn't seem to solve the issue. Wondered whether others have this problem and whether you have any ideas how to stop this happening.

Also, another small problem - I occasionally send emails without a subject, and each time have to confirm. Is there a setting which would allow me to do this without being nagged?

Thanks for any help.

The OP has already said that they were deleted from the Deleted folder, which should be permanent.

Not sure what the 'compacting' advice means, although Thunderbird does sometimes act a bit oddly if you have a lot of emails in your Inbox (several thousand in my experience), I archive mine to a local folder on my computer to keep the number down.

I presume your email is IMAP, so my suspicion would be on something happening at Gmail/Hotmail that's causing them to be downloaded again.

I've been using Thunderbird for at least the last 10 years and I've never found anything to let me not confirm a sent mail without a subject (although to be fair I'm not sure that I've ever bothered to look).

Just a thought, have you set Thunderbird to leave the e-mails on the server when deleted ? The default is delete but ........ https://support.tigertech.net/thunderbird-lmos

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

You can 'compact' emails by right-clicking an email folder, and choosing 'compact. It was suggested that this would solve the problem, but unfortunately didn't.

I don't have 1000s of emails, but receive a lot daily, which I either unsubscribe, delete, etc. Not sure whether archiving would solve the problem, as they would still be on the system.

My settings are IMAP, will check at GMail and Hotmail, to see how the accounts are set up.

Have checked settings kindly provided by molerat, mine seem slightly different - as picture. Does this seem OK?
