Dog bit postman through letterbox

I have been struggling to understand why his fingers needed to go through to the inside when the width of the door is quite thick.
As someone who regularly helps his kids deliver the local news magazine I think I can answer that.
Many of the newer doors have a strongly sprung outer flap and really thick brushes at the other end of the opening, (I presume to cut down on drafts). Pushing a fairly thick magazine through these is difficult, so I can only imagine a thin letter would need to be pushed all the way past the brushes to make it to the other side. I've seen literally hundreds of letters and advertising stuff stuck between the outer flap and the brushes where people don't push it all the way through the brushes.
IMO it shows the postie is conscientious by doing this and not leaving the letter halfway in or sticking out. I'm glad you've now fitted a cage but seriously, did you not forsee this?
Every time I come across a dog barking behind the door then there's not a hope in h*ll that I'll be pushing anything through that letterbox. I'm surprised the postie did to be fair, but then what other choice did he have? Maybe you could think about an outside box for letters?Pants0 -

I would like to think the Postie would know the difference?0 -
It's also the favourite phrase when a dog attacks another dog, jumps up on a person or does anything else that causes annoyance to someone else.
You may find they will refuse to deliver any mail to the house and you have to collect it.
Consider and outside post box.0 -

Probably - but I've hurt my hand on a few letterboxes when distributing leaflets! If they accept an apology and box fitting then fine, but if the police get involved I wouldn't want to just accept the Postie's version of events if there was any doubt. Hopefully it won't come to that!0 -
It's more likely that he pulled his hand back sharply when the dog grabbed the mail and caught his little pinkie on the letterbox in his hurry to remove his hand0

Honestly I don't know if your post is sarcastic or not but my dad has also suggested this could have happened. The two men that came asked if there was blood on the post, I showed them the two letters and there was not. Either way, I've informed my house insurance company of a potential claim and have ordered a cage to be fitted to the inside of the door.0 -

Why you thought my post was sarcastic is anybody's guess. It was not intended to be.
Was it because I called his finger a little pinkie? Were you thinking little pinkie referred to something else?0 -
Royal Mail provide their staff with posting pegs to prevent dog bites in exactly this situation. Postie should have had one and used it if he was even slightly concerned about dogs or catching his finger on a sharp edge.

Note the date - 2011 - Posties get constant reminders about dogs and the use of pegs. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -

No, wasn’t thinking something else. I apologise, didn’t mean any offence. I think because so many other posts were saying it should have been forseen and prevented, I thought you may have been suggesting sarcastically that it wasn’t even the dog that did it. Sorry0 -

This definitely explains why they were so concerned about whether there was a sign or not. They took pictures of the house to show there was no sign.0
