Error on Credit Report

Hello MSEs,
I'm new to the forum, I apologise for any breaches of forum etiquette that I may make unintentionally as I become accustomed to the forum.
After recently signing up to Experian I found that an erroneous financial link had been added to my credit report by Landmark Mortgages.
My deceased father had a mortgage with Northern Rock in 2002. He had the same initial as me, and surname. Landmark have mistaken me for my father and added the details of his mortgage erroneously to my credit report. (I was living at the same address as him in 2002)
Experian contacted Landmark on my behalf, but Landmark refused to look into the matter without being given an account number.
I do not have the account number for my deceased father's mortgage. I would, however, like this incorrect entry removed from my credit report.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

It would be easier for you to contact Landmark directly rather than going through Experian0

Hi there and welcome to MSE,
I agree that you should raise a complaint directly with Landmark about this situation. Outline the situation and try and focus on what information you do have to show the entry on your file is for the wrong person. Ask them for confirmation of the liable person's details - such as their Date Of Birth. Once you have details like this you can write back, discrediting the information as yours and ask for the entry to be removed.
If they refuse then escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service and Information Commissioner's Office. Best of luck,
Laura

I am slightly confused here as it is unclear if they have added your deceased fathers name as a financially associated person or if they have actually added the full details of his mortgage account to your credit file.
Either way, as he is now deceased, the mortgage account is now presumably settled so unless the repayment history of this account was bad having a settled mortgage account on your credit files will be beneficial not harmful. If you are financially linked to a deceased person, again harmless as any credit check on the deceased person will reveal that he is deceased.0 -
Very helpful, much appreciated.0

Contact Landmark directly to resolve this. There should be some details about the account on your credit files that you can use to identify the account associated with the incorrect entry. As mentioned, send them a "prove it" letter requesting details about the account, and when these inevitably don't match your details then you will have sufficient grounds to get it removed. Make a formal complaint and escalate it to the FOS if they try to drag it out for too long0
