Lowell Chasing for a Debt not on CRA searches.

Lowell have been in touch.

They're chasing me for an outstanding debt from 4 years ago.

I half remember it, I took out a car insurance policy over 12 months, cancelled after 8 and thought that was it.

It doesn't show on my CRA at all, not with Experian, Equifax or CallCredit, they've send me the original paperwork, or rather paperwork "reconstructed from the original" I very much doubt I actually signed anything.

It's not a huge amount of money, which I'm happy-ish to pay, but I can't afford to pay it all in one go.

They're offering 20% off, pay it over a few years if I want and all that, and I'm tempted to take them up on their offer bar one thing. I don't want it to suddenly appear on my CRA.

I want to ask them "okay, if I pay, will this show up on my CRA" because I don't trust them and I daren't give them my pressure point.

  • Are you looking at the noddle, clearscore and MSE credit club versions of your reports? If it was me, I would want to confirm the data held, by requesting Statutory Reports, as the partner versions can be incomplete.

  • No, I don't use the club, I have accounts with them directly.
  • If you know you owe it just pay it.

It will only appear on your credit reports if they pursue a CCJ if you don't pay it
  • Lowell just update existing defaults with their details, whether you pay or not. It is possible the insurance company doesn't notify the CRA, but as stated check all three CRA.
  • If you intend to pay the debt, I'd just contact them and tell them you are happy to pay, but you need to arrange some sort of repayment plan. Don't bother asking about the credit file stuff, as that just gives them some more points to apply pressure to you as they now know that matters to you.

If it isn't on your credit file now, I don't expect that it would suddenly change to be there, unless you default on the repayments or they have to chase a CCJ to get their money. But in all likelihood it probably should be on your files, so all the more reason to pay it off while they are being nice about it
  • How long have Lowell had it - did you get a notice of assignment (usually the first letter they send stating they are now dealing with the debt). If its been a couple of months and nothing is on your credit file, then can't see it appearing unless a CCJ happens

If it does appear, contact your CRA and state that its incorrect as they are not replacing the original default notice with their own and needs removing.
