Channel 4's doom and gloom look at the housing market.
It's dispatches, so expect it to be biased. (So should be a lot of fun!)

Yes - probably all of the up-and-coming media lurvies have finally realised that they can't afford anything more than a parking space in Hackney rather than the nice pad in Notting Hill which is their birthright. So they are doing their bit to improve the situation.0 -
Yer Meeja survives on boom and bust, build-em-up and knock-em-down etc, not much "news" value in "steady as she goes" (in either direction) is there...0

Are you being sarcastic? From the traillers I've seen I thought it was going to be Faiser from Dad's Army saying "we're all doomed" for 1 hour.
However , here is a question. Do the media drive HPI or Crashes, or do they just report them?0 -

You only need to look at the recent Northern Rock issue to see that the media can cause panic and drive situations such as this
It seems that it is much easier journalism to be doom and gloom (on whatever topic) than it is to report good news.
Here's a wee experiment. Open up any paper today and take a look at roughly how much is reporting a negative situation and how much is reporting a positive situation.
Now is the paper you are reading portraying life positively?:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.

The flagship current affairs programme examines the problems facing first time house buyers trying to find a property in the current price boom. The investigation asks whether or not we are approaching a crisis point in which a generation of young people will not be able to afford thier own homes - and whether the government should be protecting the interests of investors or providing affordable housing for its citizens

The media like to build things up and then demolish them. They have done this to countless celebrities so why not the housing market?
The media have played a significant part in sustaining the housing boom beyond its safe shelf life. Editors have used banner headlines like "house prices to double in 5 years" to sell papers. TV programmes have attracted viewers by showing people flipping houses for £100K profits. The media have compliantly regurgitated biased stories and statistics from lenders in return for advertising revenue.
Never forget however that the media's favourite food is a disaster story. Judging from recent newspaper articles, they have smelled blood in the housing market and they are now intent on hunting it down like a pack of dogs.0
