Hi all, my husband has started his own business, it's early days and income is low so we are claiming housing and council tax benefits. I just got a letter back saying they need his tax code, we claimed a few years ago when he was employed and they never asked for his tax code so I just wondered why they need it now. Any ideas?

When employed a tax code isn't needed, the claim is based on wage slips etc and the wage slip will show the tax code.
When self employed a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is needed to prove you are registered as self employed - I suspect that is what they are after.“You’re only here for a short visit.

Thank you for replying. When you apply, do they take into account the bills you have to pay or is it purely based on your income?0
