Advice on faulty soundbar purchased from Maplin electronics

Hi Guys and gals.

In January 2018, I purchased a soundbar from Maplin electronics. It cost me the best part of 150 quid.

It has recently developed a fault whereby the sound cuts out intermittently. Rather stupidly of me, I appear to have lost/thrown away the receipt. I paid on a debit card for this item. Now that Maplin have gone, my only recourse is the manufacturer, who are refusing to to anything without proof of purchase.

I have a bank statement, that shows funds to the correct value left my account, but obviously this could be anything, so the company has rejected this a proof of purchase.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do? Or should I just accept that it's my fault I've lost the receipt?

With the retailer the bank statement would (legally) be adequate proof of purchase ... as you're now reliant on the manufacturer's warranty then they can apply any reasonable requirements they wish - requiring proper proof of purchase (e.g. a receipt) is reasonable.

If you can't persuade the manufacturer to help you're screwed I'm afraid. They have no obligation to you unless you meet the terms of their warranty - what does it say about proof of purchase?

Use a credit card next time to get Section 75 protection!
  • They have simply asked for paper proof of postage. Which, I can not provide.

Ah well, it's my own fault for not saving the receipt. Lesson learned.

Huh? Typo and you meant purchase?
  • HA! Yes was a typo.
