BT Partial Settlement being incorrectly reported.

About two years ago I looked at my credit file for the first time ever (very bad I know) and there was an outstanding debt from BT. There was a load of other messy stuff too, but worked hard over the last 24 month to clear that up and now I have a sparkling credit file and from £10K of debt I now have nothing owing.

Anyhow, back to BT. The outstanding about was about £100, I paid off in full right away and it was marked on my report as settled (fully, not partially). Fast forward 12 months and I get an update saying it’s been updated to partially settled on Equifax. I sent a complain through Equifax, they agree it ought to be fully settled and it’s updated. A month later, it reverts to partially settled, so I go through the same process. That’s been going on now for months. Currently it’s showing as partially settled again.

Some have said it’s not really important, but I cannot imagine future lenders would be ambivalent about an account now being paid off in full. What ought me my next move to sort this out once and for all? BT say I should take up my complaint with Equifax, but that does nothing. Complaints to BT get no responses.

  • It really doesn't make that much difference.

The important thing is that it has been satisfied, following the default.

But if anyone is going to change it, it should be BT. Failing that, you could dispute it with the CRAs - remember to check all three, not just Equifax.
  • BT provide the information to the CRA's so it's down to them to update them correctly.

Raise it with BT's credit team

Maybe it’s not a big deal. But it’s still incorrect and raises a question mark over my suitability for credit, particularly a mortgage which i’m due to apply for in the next few months.

I’ve raised it with BT, but haven’t even had the courtesy of a reply. I’ve raised it with Equifax (it’s not reported on the others) and it keeps on going round in circles. It seems to be necessary to fix it at source (I.e. BT) but cannot even get a reply. Hence asking who can I complain to to prompt BT into action?
  • You could go to the FOS - but they can take a few weeks to investigate the case and get back with an update/outcome
