Credit card double charge

  • Receipts may not be necessary for a duplicate processing chargeback but in this case it is not the actual processing that has been duplicated - it is two separately approved transactions for the same bill. Evidence of a single bill may prove helpful if the retailer/acquirer rebuts the chargeback on the grounds that they are two separate transactions - which is a distinct possibility without further information.

This is why I raised the possibility of treating the dispute as a 'paid by other means' case. Whatever the case, your best chance of success is if the acquirer passes information to the retailer when they receive the chargeback and doesn't just see two separate transactions and rebut the chargeback.
  • Nationwide can be a bit of a stickler when processing duplicate transactions as I recently found out. However, I was lucky that I was able to find out a contact at the retailer I made the charge at. They found the duplicate transaction in their processing log and subsequently refunded after verifying my card number.

This route may be a little more difficult if your transaction was in Italy however....

Next time where possible, I will show them a copy of pending transactions within the Nationwide app.
