Retirement properties often cost less than properties for non-oldies :o I'd consider a retirement flat. Likely to be quieter than a regular flat and the fact that stairs are almost certain to become an issue for at least one half of the couple has to be considered, otherwise they will end up having to buy again and lose even more in the associated costs.

    No

    No. Yes.

The reason I'm asking here is that even IFAs seem to be recommending routes that would make them the most commission, and you guys seem as impartial as they come!
    Most commission. Yes.
Impartial .... weeellll, maybe. Everything you read here is an opinion really.

Can't get on to Rightmove at the moment, but there are 25 properties in Liss under £250K on Prime Location.

If they did not like the properties in their price range, could they move areas?

robwend is on a scheme where a HA will help her to buy a property. I also saw something in a local magazine which offered something similar. (I don't think I have that now - it might have gone with the recycling). I am not sure exactly what they entail - whether it would be some form of shared ownership where you pay rent on a portion of a house. i doubt they'd be lucky enough that it were some form of grant.

If it is a forever house then it makes no odds what price they pay for it. I'd rather be settled than wait for a crash that may or may not happen.

HA schemes are primarily for those who cannot afford to buy otherwise. This is not the case with the OP.

Plus their age, with regard to getting a mortgage, will probably go against them.

Out of nosey interest: what sort of house/accommodation are they living in now?

What sort of property would they wish to move into (bedrooms, style, features) - and for what reason (e.g. bungalow/bad hip might get worse in 10 years; 4-bed house/in case anybody wants to stay at Xmas; garden/LOVE gardening) .... so those of us with nothing better to do could look specifically at houses ... just because ... we like to!

It still makes a big difference what price they pay for it.
The less they pay the bigger the nest egg they will have.

robwend also has a tidy sum in cash though admittedly she would struggle to buy anywhere outright with that cash.

(I hope she forgives me for talking about her)

    There's nowt wrong with asking!

    !

i really hope you are joking 250k is still a lot of cash even these days and frankly its insane to think taxpayers money should be wasted subsidising nice people because they want to live in an expensive house somewhere nice.
