Because the hub needs the WEP password before it will allow your other device to use the internet.
If you have forgot the password I would recommend that you push the reset button on the back of the hub and set it up again with a new password.

PS: are you sure that the password is not on a sticker stuck somewhere on the router (this is what SKY do).

Or, plug into the router using a cable, go to the routers default page (put the address of your default gateway in a browser), log-in and goto the wireless settings and see what the WEP key is.

That's the easy way, there are also programmes that'll get you the WEP key in about 2 or 3 mins if you're really lazy and can't be bothered to go over to the router (I admit to doing that once :()
  • Just login to the router on a pc, usually http://192.168.0.1 or 1.1 or 2.1

    or

If you reset the router, you will lose all config, not a good idea.

While your accessing your router, change the encryption to WPA as WEP is very insecure and easily compromised!

Plug into the router using an RJ45 network cable (one in in your computer and one end in the router) and type 192.168.0.1 in the browser, log in to your router (if you didn't change the default this will be either admin, admin or admin, password for the username and password). Once on the router goto the wireless section down the left hand side and your WEP key will be there. But like someone mentioned earlier you would be better changing this to WPA while you are at it as it is more secure.

  • If you have a pc working wirelessly, you can use the nirsoft utility to find it, or if not, follow b33's suggestion, is it a netgear?
