The last time I moved it was 5 burly strangers...
And yes, I pretty much left everything where it was. If they're packing a 4-bed house in 1/2 a day they don't have time to pay much attention to what's in the smalls drawer!
I did however pack a suitcase with *ahem* personal items. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Professional movers will pick the chest of drawers up as it is and put it on the van.
Don't know about burly strangers though:rotfl:0 -
We have moved twice in about 7 years, each time deeply traumatised at the sheer amount of "stuff" we have managed to accumulate.
Advice #1 - get rid of anything you don't want, need or can ever see you using / wearing / reading again.
Advice #2
Become very well acquainted with the very helpful staff on Mr Morrison's fruit and produce dept. We somehow managed to collect something over 300 banana boxes over time, and used those.
Sturdy, stackable, not too big with carrying handles.
Simply check there are no bananas left inside, remove the polythene bag they pack the fruit in (can be useful for packing), refold the thick paper over the hole in the bottom and fill.
Write the contents on top clearly with magic marker, and on the side so you can see what is in them when stacked up.
Best of luck.
(and if anyone can tell me where my box of sharp knives has vanished to in the course of the latest move, I would be most grateful....)0 -
Some enchanted evening,
You may see a stranger,
A strapping, burly stranger,
Across a well-packed van
And when you have moved
And once you have hoov'rd
You'll find that your lives lack a box of sharp knives
Once you have found them, never let them go,
Once you have found them, ne-ver let them go-o-o-o!

Moving is expensive, we spend thousands on conveyancing and all the extra bits that crop up so I'd definitely 'invest' in decent double walled packing boxes if you need any more boxes than you've already got. As this is a money saving site you could ask on freecycle, I put mine on there once I'd finished with them as I have zero intention of ever moving again and was happy to see them do somebody else a good turn rather than getting chucked away.
Tape wise I found the cheap brown tape doesn't stick very well and the boxes popped open, the best tape I found was made by PRIMA. I bought a roll of tape with Fragile printed on it from Big Yellow Storage and this had Prima printed on the inside - think it was £2.50 for one roll but then I got a 6 pack of the brown Prima tape from Amazon for £8 delivered.

I would recommend a tape dispenser if you're going to use the packing tape. Much quicker and neater, without one I find the tape a total pain to apply. This is the one I have https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p15018?r=emarsys I'm sure others of equal or better quality are available.0

Forgot all about this thread. You'll all be delighted to know that my bottom flaps stayed snug and tight, just as nature intended them0

'Book boxes' are really quite small, for example.
Books go best in suitcases with wheels, imo.0 -

Perhaps also avoid a high fibre diet.
Regularly doing pelvic floor exercises also decreases the likelihood of this happening0
