Lifetime Mortgage problems

hi, my father in law has an equity release mortgage with Norwich Union, because My mother in law needs more care they have to move into extra care housing and thus sell the house. they were told this morning because they both don't need extra care they must pay an early redemption fee.
this seems unfair they are both nearly 90 and he can't manage to care for her properly. basically they are saying she should go into a home and he carry on living in the house,or pay a massif penalty when he has already paid them nearly £60,000, this seems unfair:(

It does seem unfair. You'll have to make an "official" complaint and if no luck take it via an ombudsman.

Can your father in law get an assessment recommending he needs more care / letter from doctor or social worker? After all if he is nearly 90 most people would benefit from extra help . Explain their predicament. More than one way to skin a cat.

    Good luck

From the OP that doesn't seem to be the problem. The problem seems to be the wholly unreasonable (IMNSHO) requirement that both parents must need care.

Another thought, OP, how about trying one of the financial advice papers such as Times or Telegraph. They can be pretty good sorting out unreasonable behavior. I had a good result via the Telegraph once.

I realise that it is the mother in law that requires care but all i was trying to say is as he is nearly 90 would it really be impossible for a sympathetic doctor or social worker to state that father in law also requires care - or even "would benefit from care". There can't be many people that would find no benefit from care at nearly 90!

I would be complaining and, if no joy, trying a newspaper too. Or local MP. The issue here is separating a couple and landing them with a financial penalty for wanting to stay living together. Shame on the mortgage company.
