If you're going to set yourself up as a handyman, can I suggest that you state loud and clear in your advert that you're a capable retired gentleman? That's a big plus point in my opinion.
In my town there has been a proliferation of young guys setting themselves up as window cleaners/gardeners/oddjob men. Some of them have qualifications up to the eyeballs, and are probably very good too. But we've used our guy John for 25+ years. He's nearly 90 (but you'd never know it - he's fitter and stronger than I am), and is worth every penny! He is reliable, punctual, knowledgable, never has Radio1 blaring out etc and his prices are reasonable.
About 20 years ago I needed some help with cutting our (huge) hedge, he said "leave it with me and I'll send you someone round before the weekend." Which he did, another fellah of the same stripe. We've used gardener Mick since that day. He doesn't advertise as he gets more than enough work through word-of-mouth so I'd never have found him otherwise.
I'm moving soon and I'm sorry I'll not likely find guys like themI'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.0
