I think I would advise against cancelling as a direct debit just in case you make a mistake or whatever then at least you won't go into arrears

what I would do is make sure that you pay any payments before the statement date not after the statement date

So in summary what is the best option for those who in the past would pay off the cash advances and purchases online during a trip away ?
I also used to put the card in credit for the beginning of a trip .

I assume the best option is cancel the direct debit completely and then put the card in credit pre trip and then when the initial positive balance runs out make online payments to the clarity towards any cash advances .

Will this accomplish the same as in the past ?
Deliberately putting the card in credit is still against the Ts & Cs, so isn't recommended - just because they haven't objected before doesn't mean that they won't in future, so why take the risk of problems with the card while you're away from home?

I have been putting my card in credit pre-trip since it was launched back in 2009 or whenever it was .
It sat in credit of a £1000 for like 6 months aprox end of 2017 and into 2018

.Just recently I have put it in credit here in the uk in oct and nov by a small amount and the direct debit was taken as per new T&C so the cards stayed in credit after the direct debit .was taken .
Rang up and had the credit refunded no prob I also refunded the £1000 earlier this year in branch to my reward account ..
The recent credits were a test to see the new change in practise ....

Objections or t&c changes can happen anytime but until they do its just schoolmaster T&C doom and gloom drama.
Im not here to follow rules to the banks advantage
At one time this site was all about doing exactly that and bending the so called rules .

If a work around exists I run with it until it folds as they all do eventually

One of the previous poss on cancelling the direct debit while away then making manual credits to it seems like it might be the 1st option .to test .while away .
I will also take a metro debit card as backup and perhaps some cash too .

It's obviously your prerogative to accept (and/or downplay) the risk; I was simply answering your question of 'will this accomplish the same as in the past' and highlighting that there are no guarantees when you're breaching published terms....

I cancelled my direct debit after speaking with a adviser that was well informed

When the clarity DD is set up as stated earlier in this thread the DD will still go out even if you pay the purchases and cash advances off early which would then put your card into credit as this happened to myself last month .

On top of this the cash advance interest clock will tick until the direct debit goes out even if you have paid the whole cash advance and purchasers early or the balance off early .

So in summary stopping the cash advance % interest clock ticking ...as was possible in the past.... is not possible at all with a direct debit set up .

If you put the clarity in credit purchasers will come off that positive balance but cash advances wont .
The main point is if the clarity has a DD set up and you take a cash advance you will pay interest on it for up to 56 days or whatever it is exactly .
The most I ever used to pay was 3 or 4 days over a long weekend as i paid it off online .
